The Regeneration of Wakefield - Talk

The regeneration of Wakefield city centre and surrounding areas continues apace. Following on from proposals to redevelop the Kirkgate area, Wakefield Council has recently announced plans for the Civic Quarter around Wood Street. The Society has been very supportive of the regeneration work carried out so far and we have invited the Council's James Stephenson, Senior Development Manager for Wakefield, to update members on all the latest plans.

The Style, History and Influence of Art Deco

From architecture to art, furniture to fashion, and much more besides, Art Deco has been one of the most enduring styles of the modern age. Although coined only in the 1960s, the term ‘Art Deco’ describes one of the most important design movements of the 20th Century. Taking its inspirations from ancient Egypt and the primitive art forms of America and Africa, the innovative, streamlined and decorative elegance of Art Deco reached its zenith in the 1920s and 30s but continues to influence design today. Original items from the period are now highly collectable but manufacturers frequently incorporate elements of Art Deco style into their current ranges.

The Year of the Celt - Talk

The next talk in our autumn programme will be given by Leeds-based author Rob Godfrey who will talk about his book, Imbolc, part one of Year of the Celt, a saga set in the Wharfedale valley in and around Otley 2,500 years ago.

This is a free event open to Society members and their guests and members of the public. The Orangery Café will be open at 7.00 pm. Teas and coffees will be available at the end of the talk.
