Call for nominations – Wakefield Civic Society Design and Environment Awards

Wakefield Civic Society has been making awards for good design since 1966. Originally made every two years, the awards are now an annual event. New for 2020, and recognising the increased public and governmental focus on climate change and the need to protect the environment, the Society is also introducing two new awards specifically aimed at environmental schemes.

Design Awards

Awards are made in five categories:

1. Best new build or environmental project

2. Best refurbishment project (building or environmental)

3. Best new/replacement shop front

4. Best new/replacement café, bar, or restaurant front

5. Best residential scheme (with 6 or more residential units)

We are seeking nominations in each category for schemes that have been completed, or substantially completed, during 2019.

Nominations for the awards can be made by anyone – members of the public, property owners, developers, architects, project managers, residents and so on. You do not need to be a member of the Society to make a nomination.

The Society will set up a panel of judges to consider any nominations received. Should the judges feel that a nomination reaches the required standard, the Society will either an award or issue a certificate of commendation.

In each category, the judges will be looking at the following criteria:

a). Overall quality of design

b). The aesthetic appeal of the finished scheme

c). Appropriateness to its purpose

d). Contribution to the wider context in which the scheme is situated

e). Accessibility

f). Quality of execution and landscaping

An important concern will be the impact on the streetscape/ public realm/ publicly accessible areas.

The Society reserves the right to make no award or commendation in any or all categories should no nomination be deemed to have met the standard expected.

How to make a nomination

Please email details of the scheme you wish to nominate to the Society at info@wakefieldcivicsociety.org.uk . Nominations can also be sent in writing to Wakefield Civic Society, PO Box 380, The Town Hall, Wood Street, Wakefield, WF1 3WT.

Please remember to include your own name, address, email address and, if possible, a phone number, as well as the address of the scheme you are nominating.

The deadline for receipt of nominations is 21^st February 2020.

Following receipt of the nomination, the Society may make contact with the property owner/developer to ask for information about the scheme.

Results will be announced at the Society’s Annual General Meeting and Awards Evening to be held at Wakefield Town Hall on the evening of 23rd April 2020. The decision of the judging panel is final.

Environment Awards

There are to be two categories of Environment Award:

1. The Wakefield Civic Society Waterton Award; and

2. The Wakefield Civic Society Sustainable Building and Development Award

Award 1 is intended to acknowledge projects that, in the example of Charles Waterton’s environmental work(*), demonstrate innovation, imagination and good practice in nature conservation, the promotion of environmental quality and support of the wider goals of sustainable development. It is open to individuals, businesses, schools, community groups, public agencies, youth groups, local councils, landowners and statutory organisations, and any other organisation with a suitable project.

Award 2 is intended to acknowledge building and development projects that demonstrate innovation, imagination and good practice in the efficient use of resources and that support the wider goals of sustainable development. It is open to built-environment professionals, developers, contractors and landowners.

We are seeking nominations for projects that were completed, or successfully introduced, during 2019.

How to make a nomination

Each award involves a statement of criteria and relevant procedures, together with a statement from the nominee to confirm that they are content to be nominated. (The procedures state that the nominee should be in agreement with the nomination and the details that are contained in the relevant application form.)

The nomination form is intended to guide the applicant as to what is required, to help systematise the assessment process and to lighten the administrative burden associated with the assessment process. The form for Award 1 is shorter and simpler than that for Award 2. Award 1 is less technical and aimed, amongst others, at small community groups.
