Each year, the Society runs a Design Awards competition to identify the best architectural and environmental schemes in Wakefield and the surrounding area. Nominations can be made by anyone and are now being sought. If you know of a scheme which fits our criteria, please do let me know before the end of January. Awards will be presented at our Annual General Meeting on Thursday, 18th April.
There are five categories of award:
1.Best new development (building or environmental) – any building or environmental project can be nominated, including individual houses
2.Best refurbishment (building or environmental) – and building or environmental project can be nominated, including individual houses
3.Best shop front – new or refurbished shop fronts
4.Best public house, café bar or restaurant frontage – again, new or refurbished
5.Best residential development (6 or more units) – can include new build or conversions and refurbishments but must contain at least 6 separate residences
Occasionally, where a nomination does not fit into any of these categories, the Society will consider a special award.
Buildings and environmental schemes can be nominated but any project nominated should have been substantially completed by the end of 2018.
Please remember that these are design awards, so we are looking for good design in completed projects. Redecoration of older properties is unlikely to qualify unless there has been some element of structural change.
Also, please bear in mind that the Society covers only the Wakefield area – i.e., the city of Wakefield and the surrounding villages and hamlets in those areas that used to form part of Wakefield City Council, Wakefield Rural District Council (part) and Stanley Urban District Council – but we do not cover the other towns in the Wakefield Metropolitan District – so not, for example, Horbury, Ossett, Castleford, Normanton, Pontefract and so on (if in doubt, please ask.)
If you wish to make nominations in any of the above categories, please email details to us at info @ wakefieldcivicsociety.org.uk (no spaces) or use the Comments box below (which is private - your comments will not appear on line) before 15th February. The judging panel will then meet to consider all nominations and the results will be announced at the AGM.
When submitting a nomination, please give the location of the project being nominated so that we can find it! If you are the architect, developer or owner of a project being nominated, it would be helpful if you could also email photographs of the completed project that we can show to the judging panel.
