The arrival of September brings with it this annual salute to the nation’s heritage as all over the country properties open their doors for inspection and themed activities are organised to show off aspects of our shared history. To find out what is happening nationally, you will need to have a look at the Heritage Open Days website where you will be able to search for property openings and special events that have been arranged over the four days. See https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/
The Society is offering three tours, two on Friday, 8th September and one on Sunday, 10th September as follows:
Walk One - a morning talk and tour of Wood Street starting from our office at the Town Hall at 10.30 am on Friday, 8th September. Looking at the history and architecture of the Wood Street area using the new book "Wood Street: The Heart of Wakefield" as a guide, the walk will be led by Executive Committee member John Ramsden. All participants will receive a free copy of the book. Together, the talk and walk will last approximately one and a half to two hours and will conclude with a visit to the Gissing Centre. Please note that while the walk in mostly on level ground, access to the Gissing Centre is via a flight of stairs.
Walk Two - an afternoon tour of Wakefield's Town and County Halls with a short illustrated talk by way of introduction. Meet at the Society’s office at the Town Hall for a 3 pm start on Friday, 8th September. The tour will be led by Executive Committee member Kevin Swift. Together, the talk and walk will last about two to two and a half hours.
Walk Three - a Sunday afternoon guided tour of Wood Street which will repeat the pattern of Walk One though without an illustrated talk. The walk will last about one and a half hours and will again conclude with a visit to the Gissing Centre. Please meet outside the Town Hall in Wood Street for a 2 pm start. The tour will be led by Executive Committee member John Ramsden.
