Work to start on next phase at Wakefield's Waterfront

Posted on 4 March 2016 by

The Wakefield Waterfront is one of the key development areas identified for the city centre as part of Wakefield's Local Plan.

Wakefield Civic Society has long been supportive of the Council's efforts to regenerate the waterfront area. The latest announcement to redevelop the Rutland Mills complex will undoubtedly build on the success of what has been achieved already with the Hepworth art gallery.

The Society very much welcomes the announcement of plans to start work on the detailed planning of the new scheme and we particularly welcome the two-year time limit that has been imposed by the Council to help make sure that something actually happens - we have seen a number of schemes start and then stall in the past leaving empty buildings to just deteriorate further, and this should avoid that problem.

We look forward to hearing more about the scheme in due course and also to working with the Council and the developers, City & Provincial Properties PLC, to turn the vision into a reality.

You can find out more about this announcement from the Council's website here.
