Theatre Royal Wakefield Talk

Join us at The Orangery to hear the latest news about what's planned for Wakefield's Theatre Royal. Theatre Executive Director Murray Edwards will bring us up to date on the plans to refurbish and re-develop this historic building. Our meeting starts at 7.30 pm and is open to all, members and non-members. The meeting is scheduled to end at approximately 9.00 pm.

There is no charge for admission.

This will be our first meeting held at the Orangery this season.

Please note that parking at the Orangery is extremely limited and is therefore reserved for blue-badge holders. If you can park off site, it would be appreciated and will free up space for those with mobility problems. There is free car parking available in Wakefield after 6 pm at council-run car parks in and around the city centre.

There has been theatre on the Westgate site since 1776 but the current building, which is grade II* listed, dates from 1894. It was designed by the internationally known British Victorian theatre architect Frank Matcham. It is thought to be the smallest remaining Matcham theatre in the country and the only remaining Matcham theatre in Yorkshire.

There are now ambitious plans to restore the Theatre to its original Victorian splendour and Murray will tell us more about where things have got to with the refurbishment, with work scheduled to start in 2015

Please note that there is some administrative business scheduled for the beginning of the meeting. This should not take long and members have been advised.

NB - We have been advised that the Orangery Café will now be opening later in the month. There will be an opportunity, however, to have a cup of tea or coffee with us after the meeting,
