Wakefield Civic Society shows city highlights to guests from Herne and Castrop-Rauxell

Wakefield has no fewer than eight twin towns - three in Germany, two in France and one each in Spain, Poland and Russia (see here for details).

The Society was delighted to meet up with guests from two of Wakefield's German twin towns - Castrop-Rauxell and Herne - on their recent long-weekend visit to the city.

The group had based themselves at the Cedar Court Hotel and began their official visit to the city with a civic reception at the Town Hall where they met the Mayor of Wakefield, Councillor Brian Holmes. They took in a number of the district's attractions, including the Hepworth Wakefield and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park as well as touring further afield to Saltaire and Haworth.

On the Saturday morning, members of the Society met the group and took them to our King Street offices where we gave them a short illustrated talk on the history of Wakefield as well as an overview of the many modern developments to be seen around the city. After that, we set off for a walk around the city centre to explore some of the architecture and history first hand (see photo - courtesy of Doris and KaJo Krekeler).

Our visitors very much enjoyed their time with us which included an impromptu visit to the recently refurbished former city museum in Wood Street which is now a centre for the performing arts for Wakefield College.
