Unity Hall lies at the heart of Wakefield, close to the refurbished train station and opposite the Theatre Royal. A grade II listed gem, it has been used and loved by the community since it was established as the Wakefield Co-operative headquarters in 1867.
The refurbishment of the building is long overdue and excitement is mounting now that a credible plan has been put together to secure its future as a new performance venue and conference/meeting centre for the city. This plan includes bringing the Hall back into use as a 600-seat (800 standing) entertainment space that will enhance Wakefield's cultural offering. You can find out more about the project on their website here.
With sufficient funding now in place to make a start, the project is underway and builders are due on site in June 2013 so our tour is possibly the last chance you will have to see inside this building before the major renovation work commences. There will also be an opportunity to hear how you can help support the project through the share subscription offer.
Our tour is open to all - you don't have to be a member of the Society to take part. Just come along on the evening for a 6.00 pm start.
We will be meeting at the rear of the building, on the car park between Smyth Street and Bank Street.
The tour will last approximately one hour. Please be aware that there are stairs to climb and that some work has already started on the building so wear suitable clothes and shoes.
