Helen Thomas – “Edgelands”
Head a mile and a half or so south east of Wakefield city centre, walk to the end of the brick terraced houses, take the path that skirts the allotments. Here, between the urban and the wild, you’re in Wakefield’s ‘Edgelands’. This is the area where I’ve been sketching; on the bank side of the disused Barnsley Canal. Surrounded by fields, roads, and railway lines; pylons and cables overhead, nettle, ragwort, crisp packets, willow, hawthorn, beer cans, burdock, baling twine and barbed wire on the side of the path.
The exhibition includes two accordion fold books, made on site in 2012, comprising of over 12 metres of sequential sketches alongside paintings created in the studio, which were made in response to the experience of this landscape.
Helen Thomas is a visual artist based in Wakefield. In 2012 Helen worked with Tell Tale Hearts Children’s Touring Theatre Company as designer on their dance theatre show Yummm! Helen also works with Wakefield based Faceless Company to deliver participatory arts projects within communities.
