No 9. Wool Market

The site of the wool market. In the medieval period, Wakefield was a significant market town. Market stalls stood in the main streets and these were, effectively, zoned. The raw wool market was here at the top of Westgate.

When Cheapside nearby was opened up at the beginning of the nineteenth century the raw wool trade moved there and the street still has a long range of woolstaplers’ warehouses.
