The plaque here, on the side of the Royal Mail building, marks the site of the Wakefield Cattle Market which opened in 1765 and was one of the largest in the north of England. Drovers brought livestock long distances by road and the animals were then pastured in fields on the outskirts of the town to await sale. Three local public houses had the name "The Graziers" for this reason, one of them overlooking the Cattle Market itself.
