Sited on the wall of The Sycamores, a private residence on Lake Lock Road near the junction with Aberford Road. The Lake Lock rail road was probably the world’s first public railway - ie rather than being for the exclusive use of a particular company, it could be used by any body upon payment of its tolls. It ran from Carr Gate to the Aire and Calder Navigation at Lake Lock, carrying coals from the Outwood, and crossed the Aberford Road close to the point where the plaque is placed. It was opened in 1798.
