No 16. The junction of Ings Road and Denby Dale Road
Toll roads, or turnpikes, provided a means of financing new routes and
maintaining or improving old ones. Here the Ings turnpike (1831-1863)
meets the Denby Dale turnpike (1825-1874). Both were new roads the
latter being by far the more useful and popular. Although Ings Road was
intended as a quick route from Wakefield Bridge for traffic going west,
the tolls made it unpopular and the preferred route remained going via
Kirkgate and Westgate.
