Novelist and playwright David Storey (1933- ) lived in this council house throughout his boyhood. (He now lives in London.) He is best known for This Sporting Life which was published in 1960 and made into a film shortly afterwards. He continues to write novels and both his novels and plays draw on his formative years in Wakefield and his knowledge of the local landscape. His latest novel is Thin-Ice Skater (2004).
