No 4. Sir Alec Clegg

Sir Alec Clegg (1909-1984), Chief Education Officer of the West Riding County Council, 1945-1974. He was a major advocate for comprehensive schools and stressed the central role of art, music, drama and physical education in developing the rounded human being. Saw Bretton Hall established as a place for training teachers in Art, Music and Drama, and Lady Mabel College, Wentworth Woodhouse, for the training of PE teachers. His positions included
being chairman of the Yorkshire Television advisory committee. He was knighted in 1965.
