N0 26. Kenneth Leighton, Denstone Street

Boyhood home of Kenneth Leighton (1929-1988), one of the most distinguished of British post-war composers. Gained much of his early musical training as a chorister at Wakefield Cathedral whilst attending Queen Elizabeth Grammar School. He went on to Queen’s College, Oxford, gaining degrees in both Classics and Music. Later, taught at Leeds, Edinburgh University and Oxford universities, becoming Reid Professor of Music in Edinburgh in 1970. An outstanding keyboard performer and conductor as well as a composer of many and varied works for voice, piano, chamber group and full orchestra.
